Cannon in front of the Visitor Center entrance to the Antietam Battlefield National Park near Sharpsburg, MD. Antietam is remembered as the Bloodiest Day in American History. At the Battle of Antietam between Union and Confederate troops in September 1862, more than 22,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, or missing. Outcome of the battle, even though inconclusive, led Abraham Lincoln to announce his Emancipation Proclamation.
